The Big Apple remains one of the most popular destinations for travellers, tourists and honeymooners.
It goes without saying that New York City – the Big Apple itself – should be a mandatory part of any honeymoon trip to the USA. Don’t be afraid to live out all your cinematic dreams – you’re on your honeymoon after all! Take a horse-drawn carriage through Central Park, stroll past John Lennon’s ‘Strawberry Fields’ memorial and go shopping on the notorious Fifth Avenue. Realise your Sleepless in Seattle fantasies at the top of the Empire State Building, or pretend you’re Diane Keaton in Manhattan beneath the Queensboro Bridge. New York City is incredible when it snows, and Central Park a dream in autumn and spring. If you’re honeymooning in summer, however, it could be a good idea to do as the ‘Noo Yawkers’ do, and leave the city streets in favour of the Hamptons.
The Hamptons are a cluster of hamlets and villages on the east end of Long Island, and are a popular summer holiday choice among those with a taste for luxury. With a wide range of holiday homes available, the Hamptons could be the perfect place for you and your partner to enjoy some much-earned newlywed relaxation in the comfort and seclusion of a private property. There are also a number of bed & breakfasts, hotels and inns in the area.
Where should we stay?
In New York City, it’s hard to pass up the big name hotels (like the renowned Waldorf Astoria). That said, there are a number of boutique hotels to choose from too – and a quick search on the net will demonstrate the lively ambiences that these unique accommodations have to offer. If cultural history is your thing, stay in the legendary Chelsea Hotel – ex-home to a huge range of musicians, artists, writers and poets in the 1960s when it made its name.
There’s also the quintessential ‘NYC’ option of the converted warehouse apartment – the high ceilings and giant windows of these places are hugely sought after in the big city. There happen to be a number of them available for short-term rent, and it could be a great way for a newlywed couple to experience New York City on a more personal level. When looking for apartment listings, make sure there are a) plenty of pictures, so you know what you’re in for, and b) ample user references and reviews – preferably glowing ones. It couldn’t hurt to find one with a hot tub either….
Where should we eat?
With over 22,000 restaurants, you’ll never be short of fine cuisine to enjoy in the Big Apple – but don’t forget the cheap and cheerful options that the city has to offer too. If it’s sweet stuff you’re after, there’s the famed Magnolia Bakery (known for its cupcakes, thanks to Sex & the City), or if it’s savoury you can always head to the Lower East Side for the best bagels in town. Either way, you’re sure to enjoy a honeymoon full of scrumptious treats for the tastebuds.
