Visiting Bangkok is an essential first stop if you are visiting Thailand, the experience of visiting this vibrant city should not be missed!
Bangkok is a bustling city and deciding how to spend your time can be overwhelming. A standout attraction is the Grand Palace, which hosts the temple of the Emerald Buddha, the most revered Buddha image in Thailand.
Wat Po is another attraction favoured by culture buffs. The temple is built around the enormous reclining golden Buddha, which can be viewed between structural beams. Get there early to beat the swarms of tourists and ensure you are covered despite the climate, as strict modest dress codes apply.
Impressive shopping is another trait the capital is renowned for. From the legendary MBK, the sophisticated Emporium, trendy Siam Discovery or the upscale Siam Paragon, Bangkok means bargains. And of course, no Bangkok shopping spree is complete without a visit to a market.
On top of exotic objects galore, each offers a unique Thai experience, from the excitement of rummaging through the Chatuchak Weekend Market, exploring the popular floating market or even the night stalls in the infamous Patpong district.
For a little honeymoon luxury and a romantic evening, start at Sirocco Restaurant at the Lebua State Tower, located on the 63rd floor and the world’s highest alfresco restaurant. The open-air location is the pinnacle of fine dining in Thailand, with a panoramic bird’s-eye view of the city and the majestic Chao Phraya River. Continue your evening in Bangkok’s embassy district, Chidlom-Ploench, with a nightcap at the Conrad Hotel’s Diplomat Bar, where you can rub shoulders with international and Thai diplomats, dignitaries and the rich and famous. Sit back and sip a range of signature cocktails in true Thai style, or head to the funky Syn for Asian-inspired cocktails, fun floor lighting, suspended bubble chairs and a blend of house music.
For a livelier night on the town, the Lumpini night bazaar, also known as the Suan Lum night bazaar, offers everything you could think to buy from handmade goods to cheap designer wares. Some of the better offerings include jewellery, furniture and beautifully carved Thai wares and art. Don’t be afraid to make an offer as Thai traders appreciate a barter!
A little further out is another famous attraction, Khao San Road. This bustling, neon-sign flanked road is a popular drinking spot where you can mingle with other westerners, purchase cheap trinkets, have your hair braided, and people watch from the bars that line the road.
