After the strain of organising your wedding, the thought of a 24-hour trip to the other side of the world might not seem like the ideal way to relax. With some of the world’s best beaches, fine dining and romantic resorts WA is the perfect honeymoon destination.
Western Australia’s dramatic inland landscapes and pristine coastline makes it an internationally renowned holiday destination and the perfect getaway.
The north is covered with undulating plains and ancient rocks whereas the south is renowned for its leafy wineries and stunning beaches. The state is an immense playground of native riches. In fact, it is so special that it will be difficult deciding where to go.
Perth
Western Australia’s capital city is a great starting point for your honeymoon. It is the most isolated city in the world, which might explain its relaxed vibe. The city is situated between the beaches of the Indian Ocean in the west and the Darling Ranges in the east. The Swan River winds through it, providing that extra bit of scenery while you stroll the streets.
Beaches
Its three main beaches: Cottesloe, City Beach and Scarborough are remarkably clean considering their close proximity to the central business district. However, if you want to escape to a deserted beach there are numerous options.
Local attractions
Although the city has its fair share of skyscrapers and city buzz, the streets are tidy, the air is fresh and the people are very friendly. King’s Park is its major attraction, featuring 400 hectares of virgin bushland and botanic gardens. You can see more than 2000 plant species, a gorgeous water garden and walkways that would tempt even the weariest traveller. The park is a lovely spot for a picnic - shaded by towering eucalypts and with a good view of the city skyline.
Dining
The city’s multicultural population is reflected in its colourful and lively dining experiences, from sophisticated European cafes for the coffee connoisseur to an array of aromatic Asian restaurants. For a bohemian atmosphere, head to Fremantle where you will find a street lined with chic cafes, which heads to the historic port where street markets and colonial architecture will fill an entire day.
Rottnest Island
The popular Rottnest Island is only 18km from the central business district and is easily accessible by ferry. The island is a treasure trove of coral reefs and hidden coves and is a great day-trip from the city. Swan Valley is only 20 minutes drive and also makes for a short trip out of the city. You will feel a world away as you wander the award-winning wine growing region.
Margaret River
Hop in a hire car and drive until you reach the beauty that is the Margaret River. Only three-and-a-half hours drive from Perth, the Margaret River is home to lush green forests, first class wineries and beaches that lure the world’s top surfers.
Wineries
The list of notable wineries in the Margaret River region is huge, and making the decision over which ones to visit is difficult. However, standouts include Leeuwin Estate and Voyager Estate. Both wineries boast impressive restaurants that can turn lunch into a divine culinary experience. If you would rather a spontaneous day-trip, drive along Caves Road and stop at the estates that tickle your fancy.
Natural wonders
There are plenty of limestone caves, which are a must-see for everyone. Whether you want to explore them adventurer-style or simply admire their aesthetic beauty, a little underground scenery will make your day.
Visit the Caveworks Visitor Centre for a comprehensive guide or head straight to Jewel Cave - the best in the region.
For the tree huggers, the south-west is a playground of towering forests. The area of ‘tall trees’ is near the timber towns of Bridgetown and Nannup and the drive between these towns is not to be missed.
To walk among the trees and become one with nature visit the Valley of the Giants near the inlets of Walpole and Nornalup. Here you can experience the very popular Tree Top Walk - a 600m-long ramp rising from the floor of the valley allowing you to meander among the canopy of the giant tingle trees. This area is perfect for bush walkers with many trails to discover.
Down south
The coastline from Albany to Demark is dotted with coves and bays, dramatic cliffs and gentle swell beaches. The Southern Ocean coastline coaxes dolphins and whales to its shores and spotting them from the coastal cliffs is an exhilarating experience.
The outback
Picture a theatrical red landscape and a cloudless blue sky - for miles and miles. Western Australia’s Golden Outback is the place for true outback adventure, historic ghost towns and starry starry nights. East of the bigger settlements, such as Kalgoorlie-Boulder, lies the Eyre Highway, which eventually leads you across the infamous Nullarbor Plain to South Australia. This is a great route for four-wheel-drive fanatics as is the Gunbarrel Highway that leads to Uluru.
