Love at first sight. That’s how Michael describes meeting Lily, who he first spotted lunching at the small bistro opposite his office.
Little did he know that Lily, who worked in the building next to his, had noticed him too. One night when they serendipitously ended up in the same bar for after-work drinks, Michael came over and introduced himself.
Four years later, on a walk from Bondi to Bronte, Michael suggested the couple sit and rest on the cliff at Tama. It was something they normally did because Michael was afraid of heights, so Lily was surprised when he proposed. She loved how casual and spontaneous it was.
When it came to planning their big day, both Lily and Michael agreed that many of the traditions associated with weddings just didn’t suit them. The pair chose a simple beach theme for the day and decided on the location – Casuarina Beach for the ceremony, and nearby Balinese restaurant Bamboo at Santai Resort for the reception.
While holidaying in Hawaii, Lily came across a beautiful boutique and tried on a BCBG Max Azaria dress. The exquisite cream concoction had a tiered skirt and decorative black waistband. She decided it was “the one” after leaving Hawaii and then had to hunt it down from Sydney.
Inspired by the touch of black in her own gown, Lily decided that black would be a perfect match for her bridesmaids. Their ebony dresses picked up the delicate floral pattern from her cream gown, complementing it perfectly.
Lily and Michael said “I do” in a romantic ceremony beneath blue March skies. Sheltered by bamboo teepees, the guests looked on as artfully hung Balinese flags flew overhead.
The festivities continued at Santai, which Lily’s friends decorated with fresh frangipanis. They decided against some of the more traditional elements of a wedding such as cutting the cake and the bouquet toss and instead infused Balinese culture into the ceremony and reception.
