However, planning a unique day wasn’t without its challenges. The couple immediately ran into trouble trying to find a venue that fit into their vision of a non-traditional wedding. Finally, they came across the Metro Arts gallery in Brisbane and were able to book out the entire second floor of the 100-year-old, heritage-listed building. Apart from the original wooden floorboards, the space was completely bare.

The theme for their wedding was an evening picnic in the woods, and Cassie and Paul planned every element themselves. They decorated the gallery with gathered leaves and pinecones, and Cassie arranged daffodils and jonquils in jars and antique glasses. Meanwhile, Paul put together a photomontage with pictures of the couple as kids, teenagers and adults.

Cassie had fallen in love with a Carla Zampatti design on the internet, and decided the short, vanilla-coloured dress would make an excellent wedding gown. It definitely wasn’t a traditional dress, but it suited the eclectic feel of the wedding perfectly. She kept her bouquet simple, wrapping a yellow gingham ribbon around the stems of daffodils and adding a brooch. She completed her look with silver Witchery flats.

After spending 14 hours setting up the venue the night before the wedding, Paul and Cassie were both exhausted on the day, but that didn’t stop them from enjoying their magical reception which featured a wedding tree, where guests left their thumbprint and a short note to the couple, a cute guest book filled with polaroids taken on the night and beautiful autumn leaves and pine cone decorations.
