Jarrod’s proposal over takeaway pizza and wine at the Glenbrook air force base was supposed to be casual, but he happened to proposition Selda just as fireworks started going off in the distance.
The couple wanted their big day to reflect their personalities and decided on themes based on the era Selda loves, the 1950s, and Jarrod’s air force career.
The bride, wanting a dress with a 1950s look, designed her Christian Dior-influenced gown and found the perfect dressmaker to bring it to life. The champagne silk shantung featured a black waistband and bow, full skirt with box pleats and strapless folded bodice with boning.
She paired the dress with long black gloves, a dark pearl necklace from her mother, and a fascinator with netting. Because the wedding was held in winter, she also wore a black fur stole for part of the day.
The wedding was held under a tree at the Glenbrook air force base. Jarrod’s RAAF service uniform perfectly complemented Selda’s vintage look. An air force chaplain married the couple and after the couple said “I do”, Jarrod’s close friends made a guard of honour with swords for the newlyweds to walk through.
The military theme continued at the reception with every table place including a piece of coloured paper and a set of instructions so that guests could make paper aeroplanes.
Guests left with a bomboniere of treasure chest-shaped boxes filled with sugared almonds and Turkish delight that the mother of the bride sourced from a Turkish grocer. The couple flew to London and Paris for three weeks for their honeymoon.
