Coloured
wedding dresses are making a comeback in the fashion world with designers embracing bright hues of shimmering pinks, metallics, and bold primary colours in their wedding dress collections.
Bridal designer Lisa Merton says the colour comeback has a lot to do with the independent nature and daring fashion choices of
modern brides.
“Not every bride wants the big white meringue,” Lisa says. “Women are getting married later now. They’re more likely to be in their mid-20s or early 30s and they’ve developed their own sense of style.”
And while it’s rare to see a bride in full colour, more brides-to-be are experimenting with bridal couture in non-traditional hues such as scarlet, sage green,
blues and purples. Brides are also making modern variations on traditional white and ivory wedding gowns with coloured lace overlays in pinks, metallics and lavender.
Lisa says Hollywood stars and fashion icons such as Nicole Kidman, Gwyneth Paltrow and Scarlett Johansson, who take risks and wear vibrant colours, inspire brides to use colour in their own wedding gowns.
Black is another bold colour making its mark in bridal couture, with black and white combinations a popular choice for wedding colour themes. Black and white adds a classical twist to a modern dress.
How to choose the colour of your wedding dress:
• Choose a colour that is flattering to your
skin tone. For fair skin tones choose couture gowns in ivory, latte or pale pink. For darker skin tones choose silver, bronze or green.
• Choose a colour that has cultural significance. For example, in Chinese and Indian cultures red is a symbol of wealth and prosperity.
• If you don’t want a coloured wedding gown, but want your dress to reflect your wedding
theme, add a hint of colour to your wedding dress with
accessories, a sash, waistband or pattern.
• If you’re stuck for wedding colour ideas, consider the colour themes from other elements of the day – such as your
flowers,
cake or
stationery and match your wedding dress to them.
