The days when all a groom had to do was jump into a suit and slap on some aftershave before fronting up to the altar are long gone. The modern male wants to look just as sharp as his bride-to-be, and this means taking care of himself, inside and out.
Shape up
Just as your bride-to-be is whipping her body into shape to fit into her gown, grooms should also think about the figure they cut in their wedding suit. Having a regular fitness routine in place for at least six months will ensure you’re in shape and has the added benefit of helping to tame any pre-wedding jitters, as exercise is a great endorphin-releaser. All it takes is some basic weight training and regular cardio to stay fit and keep any weight off. Aim for at least three sessions per week, but no more than five.
Eat well
Now is also the time to think about diet and nutrition. Over-indulging in rich foods and alcohol spells disaster if you want to look good on your wedding day, so think twice before having that second helping.
Treatment time
If you’re experiencing problem skin or simply looking for some TLC, it’s time to bring in the professionals. The day spa is no longer exclusive to women; many men have discovered the benefits of massages, facials and even manicures.
Regular facials are great for your complexion, and if you’ve ever entertained the idea of well-groomed nails, a pre-wedding manicure is definitely in order. As for your hair, grooms tend not deviate too much from their regular hairstyles prior to the big day. If you must make a change, try it out early. And don’t worry about what your mates will think. It’s your day too, you’re allowed to spoil yourself and make sure you look your best.
On the day
When it comes to your big day, make sure you allow adequate time to get ready so you don’t feel rushed or under pressure. Have your skin routine in place and don’t use any new products – you never know if you’re going to have an allergic reaction to a moisturiser or gel.
Make sure you drink plenty of water to keep hydrated and have a substantial breakfast or lunch so you feel good throughout the day.
It’s a good idea to opt for a subtle aftershave – and one that you know your bride likes – so you don’t overpower her when she arrives at the ceremony.
Finally, remember to take a break from your grooming and dressing routine to relax and enjoy some time with your family and groomsmen.
