Choosing your wedding cake

Gone are the days when all you had to choose from was a variation of the same old fruitcake. Now you’re positively spoiled for choice when it comes to finding the perfect wedding cake. And with most cake sellers offering taste testing, this step is definitely one of the highlights of the wedding planning process. Here are some wedding cake ideas that will tempt every bride with a sweet tooth.

Traditional style

If your tastes are more traditionally inclined you might go for the old favourite - a heavy fruitcake decorated with royal icing. Or you might opt for the more recent addition - a chocolate mud cake.

These are two of the sturdiest cakes. The can hold the heavy traditional icing and both stay moist and fresh for longer. They are also less affected by the weather, which is an important consideration if you’re marrying in the heat of summer. No one wants a melted wedding cake on their big day.

Something different

Wanting a more adventurous wedding cake? Maybe something a little more French will tempt you. The decadent croquembouche, a tower of custard-filled profiteroles drizzled with chocolate, toffee and decorated with spun sugar, is a popular choice.

For a truly mouthwatering option ask your baker to combine delicious concoctions of dark chocolate sponge, chocolate mousse, violet-flavoured creme brulee, meringue, nougatine and white chocolate cake.

And if you can’t settle on just chocolate, choose a different flavour for each tier of your wedding cake. You can have a layer of chocolate mud, a layer of vanilla and raspberry and a layer of orange and poppyseed.

Those with a penchant for bite-sized treats can opt for a tiered stack of wedding cupcakes. They look divine and are easy for guests to take home if they’re too full after a delicious dinner. Some couples are throwing out the wedding cake idea altogether and choosing to have a delicious chocolate fountain instead.

The most important thing is to have fun with this part of the wedding planning. It’s an opportunity for you and your fiancée to come up with something unique and perfectly suited to you. And don’t forget to test run some flavours with a taste testing!
