Not many brides are willing to spend their honeymoon in a tent – unless it’s like those on Wilson Island, which come with a king-size bed, double hammock, sweeping ocean views and Molton Brown toiletries in the ‘shower block’. This tiny coral cay, located 40 minutes by launch from Heron Island, with its divine sweep of castor-sugar sand and snorkelling straight off the beach, can be hired out in its entirety or enjoyed with a maximum of 12 other guests. This is a five-star stay with a difference. There’s no glitzy spa or high-tech gym, and while bathroom facilities are suitably upmarket, they’re also centrally located to minimise environmental impact.
Wilson Island offers guests a Robinson Crusoe-type experience that’s akin to being shipwrecked on a beautiful tropical island, albeit in the lap of luxury. And that’s exactly why honeymooners love it.
This laid-back island is one of the most ideal places in the world to relax and unwind after the stress and excitement of a wedding. Dressing for dinner requires little more than wearing something summery that goes with sun-kissed skin. Bare feet, rather than shoes, are de rigueur.
Each evening begins with sunset cocktails on the beach followed by dinner in the Longhouse and, from November to March, finishes with the opportunity to watch turtles come ashore to lay their eggs; from June to October Humpback whales cruise past and put on a show, leaping out of the ocean and slapping their tails on its surface. Even with other guests on the island, it still feels like you’re completely alone. With no mobile phone or internet access and no outside distractions, the freedom from modern-day living provides yet another reason to love this beautiful place.
